Active Girls Get Big Boost from Vitamin Supplements

Before your daughter gets her game face on, make sure she's getting enough calcium and vitamin D.  A recent study found that female Navy recruits who did not take calcium and vitamin D supplements, were 25 percent more likely to have stress fractures. 

With an increasing number of girls participating in sports like soccer, gymnastics and volleyball, taking a daily supplement can help protect their still-developing bones.  "I recommend that all of my female patients take 1,200 to 1,500 milligrams of calcium citrate and 800 international units (IU) of vitamin d3 daily," says orthopedic surgeon Dr. Sabrina Strickland. 

Parents can also help prevent sports-related injuries in their daughters by encouraging them to cross-train – taking part in a variety of athletic activities, and having them eat 12 – 15 grams of protein at every meal.
